Conservation of the Colombian Amazon – COAMA

COAMA is both a vision and a program, to coordinate actions that empower indigenous communities and protect the Colombian Amazon.  The program emerged in the late 1989, with a small group of NGOs – Gaia Amazonas, Etnollano Foundation, Puerto Rastrojo Foundation, and our European partner, the Gaia Foundation (UK) – enabling indigenous communities to gain the experience and confidence to manage their own projects and to evolve regional programs for their own education, health, self-government and natural resource management.  The COAMA story is one that we encourage other regions, an approach to conservation that puts indigenous people at the heart of the process. Our publication “Guardianes de la Selva” (available in Spanish) charts the journey and achievements of COAMA.
