Through platforms we have helped to set up, the Colombian government is decentralising the management and resources of these programs to the local indigenous governments. If this is properly handled it will be sustainable from a cultural, environmental and economic point of view. The problem is that indigenous communities must learn how to manage these new responsibilities and the government must learn how to adapt the administration to the cultural diversity. The Cocotal training center does precisely this, it trains indigenous leaders in inter-cultural education, health, strategic planning and management of public funds. It also brings together indigenous elders, governments authorities and leaders of the private sector to get to know and understand each other.
Maintaining El Cocotal costs $3’000 USD a month. That is an average of $40’000 USD a year.

In Gaia Amazonas we deeply believe that in the centre of the conservation of the Amazon lies the traditional indigenous knowledge. Weaved between the ancient myths are the answers of coexistence between humans and the forest, the basis of a healthy relationship with the lungs of the world. This is why we have worked for over 25 years in the conservation of the Amazon through the strengthening of indigenous culture.
Now more than ever we need your help to find solutions to the pressures that are threatening their existence. Support our cause, if you wish to support our cause, Make a Donation and help us get our message across to more people!
